Its latest flagship store, the ninth in Hong Kong, is second in size to Prada's shop in Tokyo.

'Hong Kong is no longer just the international platform for the Far East; it increasingly represents a launch pad into the Chinese market,' said Miuccia Prada, grand-daughter of the international brand's founder, designer and boss, who opened the two-floor store yesterday.

'It creates the trends and acts as a showcase for this market.'

The opening was followed last night by a party at the former Marine Police Headquarters, which was transformed into a tribute to Prada.

The company's image-minders waxed lyrical about the shop, designed by Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi.
