THE Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) suffered its second setback in three days when a train arrived at Hunghom station on fire yesterday.
Smoke poured from the underside of one of the carriages as the southbound train, carrying about 400 passengers, arrived at the packed station during morning rush-hour.
The entire 12-car train was taken out of service and was being examined at the KCRC's Ho Lung Lau workshop at Fo Tan. The fire was caused by overheating due to an electrical fault.
KCRC public affairs manager Tracy Lai Ng Lai-kuen said no disruption was caused to passengers.
''We do express our apologies but stress the incident was minor,'' she said.
''The train was taken out of service but it was due to terminate at Kowloon anyway. It made it back to our workshop under its own steam.'' On Tuesday night, fire broke out on the southbound platform at Sha Tin station when a compressor used in the construction of a new escalator exploded. Passengers said buses laid on by the KCRC could not cope with the thousands of commuters stranded for more than an hour.
