A web of yellow ribbon linking Wedding Card Street flats is fluttering above residents and shop owners in a tribute to their beloved alley before a redevelopment project replaces it. The campaign that residents and shop owners spent a month preparing links 48 buildings. Wan Shuet-chun, who has lived in the street for 30 years, said the yellow ribbon represented the good relationship between the people, their social network and their strong emotional attachment with the alley. 'I want to tell everyone that this network and community will soon be breaking down because of the Urban Renewal Authority's redevelopment project. Everything will be history soon,' she said. 'We want to see the community preserved.' The authority wants to pull down Lee Tung Street, commonly known as Wedding Card Street, and redevelop the busy Wan Chai area into a new commercial district. Residents have been battling the proposal since February. Wan Chai District Council chairwoman Ada Wong Ying-kay said that as long as the authority had the will, it was possible to preserve the community. Ms Wong said the authority should consider rebuilding the Wedding Card Street community at a nearby redevelopment in Johnston Road.
