Racing wouldn't be racing without a rumour mill, and the one it ground out this week had a larger serving of spice than usual. The hot goss was that champion jockey Douglas Whyte had signed a contract to go to Japan next season. Not so, says the Durban Demon. 'I went to ride in Japan last December for their international jockeys challenge and someone asked me then if I'd be interested,' he explained. 'That was the end of it. I didn't pursue it and there has definitely been no contract signed.' The mere thought of a Whyte-free zone sent ripples of anticipation through the local jockey ranks, but it seems the boys were getting excited prematurely. 'They'll have to put up with me for a while yet,' Whyte concluded. Meanwhile, Australia's Damien Oliver has begun his assault on Japan in style, landing two quick winners and finishing second in the Group One Tenno Sho (Spring) last weekend.
