University officials have started interviewing students involved in a mass brawl at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in which one student was arrested and four were injured. 'The university's investigations are continuing and a major part of it is to talk with the students involved,' said a university spokesman. 'There were dozens of students there and it will take some time before we can finish talking to them all. This incident involved most students from two of our halls [dormitories] and most of our follow-up work has been focused on them.' On Tuesday, about 70 students were at an indoor sports hall for a basketball match between two undergraduate dormitories when the brawl broke out. One student, 20, was arrested. It was also alleged that 10 undergraduates assaulted three other students with bamboo sticks. Four students, aged between 20 and 22, suffered minor injuries. It was said that students from the dormitories had previous disputes. The university's president, Paul Chu Ching-wu, warned in an e-mail on Wednesday to staff and students that disciplinary action would be taken against those found responsible. The university has indicated that possible measures included reprimands, community service at the university, withdrawal or suspension of privileges, as well as expulsion. But Professor Chu said he was 'heartened that the executive committees of the two halls indicated in their joint statement that they will reflect on the incident'. The 20-year-old student, who was arrested for alleged assault, was released on $500 bail on Wednesday. He is required to report back to the police in three weeks.
