Talking competency

Structured selection techniques, such as competency-based interviews (CBI) are becoming popular with hiring managers, because they provide more reliable performance data than unstructured biographical interviews.

However, the style of CBIs differs significantly from traditional interviews. Job seekers will benefit from being prepared to illustrate their skills by using specific examples, in case their next interviewer adopts a competency-based approach.

Different style

Unlike traditional interviews, where questions are structured around a chronological discussion of job history, a CBI interview is structured around a framework of competencies such as communication or leadership.

Interviewers ask a range of questions designed to elicit evidence of past performance relating to each competency.
