KCRC chairman Michael Tien Puk-sun says he should shoulder some of the blame for the rail operator's profit shortfall this year.

He admitted yesterday that it was wrong to blame competitors and the government for the company's drop in profits. He would consider quitting as head of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation if the company continued to perform below expectations.

'If I continue to do poorly [in running the company], or my personal strategies [for running KCRC fail], or I am unable to invest enough time, I will stop,' he said.

On Friday, Mr Tien announced that the KCRC would face a $600 million shortfall in expected pre-tax profits this year, falling from an expected $900 million to $300 million.

He earlier blamed part of the drop on the government for breaking its promise to cut bus routes that competed with West Rail, as well as the freeze in property development along the route.

Mr Tien also said half the profit drop was due to East Rail being hit by competition from illegal cross-border bus services.
