Guangzhou will offer cash rewards of up to 300,000 yuan to informers reporting fake or substandard products being sold in markets.

The rewards would be offered to hundreds of part-time product inspectors enlisted last year to help catch people manufacturing or selling fake products, Southern Metropolitan News reported.

The city has about 1,300 part-time inspectors and the report said Guangzhou had decided to offer the cash incentives - which start at 300 yuan and work their way up - to encourage them to work harder.

The mainland has seen several high-profile scandals involving fake or substandard products recently. In the latest incident, two men were killed and another two sent to hospital after drinking illegally produced homemade alcohol on Tuesday in Guangzhou.

The Guangdong Health Department issued an emergency notice on Wednesday night, warning consumers not to buy alcohol that was not properly bottled.

The deadly brew is believed to have been produced in a village in the Beiyun district of Guangzhou. So far no one has been arrested.
