Mutual recognition agreement will enhance the mobility of engineers by easing the employment process on both sides

As part of its drive to create more international career options, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers will sign a mutual recognition agreement with its Canadian counterpart today.

The agreement will enable institution members in all major disciplines to work as licensed engineers in Canada, without having to retake professional examinations as previously required. Canadian engineers moving to Hong Kong will enjoy similar advantages.

'After the signing, only an interview, a test on local law and practice and one year's equivalent work experience will be needed for our members to work in Canada,' institution vice-president Greg Wong Chak-yan said.

'The chances of employment will still depend on individual qualifications and skills, but basically the agreement will enhance mobility.'

According to Anthony Burger, Canadian Consul-General in Hong Kong, the deal is an example of the trend towards globalisation and of his government's policy of removing artificial barriers to trade in professional services.
