Officials in Beijing and Hong Kong yesterday tried to calm fears that freedom of speech in Hong Kong had been eroded after two popular radio hosts quit their programmes.
Their calls for calm came after a row broke out between Democrat James To Kun-sun, chairman of the Legislative Council's security panel, and the police.
Mr To said he had information that police had evidence pointing to the two celebrities being put under pressure. Police denied his claims.
In the past two weeks, Albert Cheng King-hon and Raymond Wong Yuk-man, both talk-show hosts on Commercial Radio, have gone off the air and left Hong Kong.
Cheng cited repeated death threats as one reason for leaving.
Wong is also understood to have been under pressure and spoke of the need for a break. He had earlier said he would quit if he felt the safety of his family was under threat.
Both men have been victims of violent attacks in the past and these crimes are still under police investigation.
