Mandara Spa at Sheraton Sanya Resort Hainan Island www.mandaraspa.com Hainan Island, dubbed the Hawaii of China, is fast catching up with its more established counterparts such as Phuket, Bali and the original Hawaii, thanks partly to the Miss World beauty pageant held last year in the island's southern city of Sanya. Besides boasting all the trimmings of a resort and the Yalong Bay Golf Club (a five-minute walk away), Sanya also offers the attraction of the Mandara Spa. The spa has the aura of an ancient sanctuary. Its whopping 12,000-square-foot interior is lined with marble, tiles and carved stone. I had an evening appointment for a massage treatment, and had chosen 'The Perfect Spa Experience' package. The treatment room was a big suite - all to myself (highly recommended for couples.) My therapist, Rose, gave me a foot bath followed by a salt scrub, which was revitalising. A quick shower was followed by the Lomi Lomi Massage, an ancient technique developed in Hawaii that involves long gliding strokes, kneading and 'dancing' movements that relax and revive the muscles, joints and tendons. All the fatigue and muscle pains from an extra-active day evaporated with the lomi lomi effect. The three-hour treatment ended with a papaya and honey facial that felt deeply cleansing - just what I needed after a day in the sun. To wrap up things, I then had a back massage sitting up. Rose had a delicious peppermint tea waiting for me when I returned after changing into my clothes. The spa experience costs 1,240 yuan, which is not at all expensive considering that the whole package makes you feel like a king (or a queen). The massage and facial can be had separately. There is a wide range of packages, such as the Chinese Herbal Back Treatment and the Javanese Lulur. Dragonair has a Sanya Easy package at the Sheraton Sanya Resort starting from $2,330.
