Spa At Bali Hyatt

Bali Hyatt's gardens are renowned for their splendour. Home to more than 600 plant species, the grounds are a patchwork of intricate passageways, water gardens and tall trees. The resort spa is almost unnoticeable in this tropical setting. Only a discreet plaque marks its presence.

Despite this, Spa At Bali Hyatt draws in a solid stream of hotel and walk-in guests through reputation. Even during the low season on the tourist calendar, the register remained full. Spa-goers are advised to call a day or two in advance to avoid disappointment.

The spa has been built in the style of traditional Balinese courtyards. Local stonework, thatched roofs and water elements conjure up a tranquil backdrop for those in search of relaxation.

The spa has been designed to provide a personalised experience, says Andrew Wong, director of marketing for Hyatt resorts in Bali.

There are only four 'villas' for couples and another four smaller treatment rooms for single guests.

Each villa has its own changing room and treatment area, opening up onto a small private outdoor patio with a shower, whirlpool bath and Balinese-style pavilion where guests can rest in between treatments. Single treatment rooms are similarly self-contained for privacy.

The spa prides itself on its massage treatments, which incorporate a number of flavours, including Southeast Asian, Shiatsu, Swedish and sports, combined according to individual needs. Spa executive Diah Restu Suariningrat  says: 'Many guests have remarked that our massage therapy is distinctive among spas in Bali.'

For couples, there are six villa treatments to choose from. Aside from The Raharja (US$310 for two), a marathon therapy session running for five hours. These packages typically last about two hours and cost about US$200. The same packages are available for single guests at half the price.

We tried the Inner Jegeg treatment, which encourages deep relaxation. After a brief spell in the sauna, a scalp massage (using first aromatic oils then hair cream), an avocado seed and coconut body scrub, and a mineral bath, we were practically comatose for the finale, a 45-minute aromatic body massage.

A twin spa is being planned at Bali Grand Hyatt, the Bali Hyatt's sister resort lying further east. Until then, Grand Hyatt guests can take a free shuttle bus to the Sanur resort for therapy.

Rates start at US$70  for standard guest rooms and $150 for suites at the Bali Hyatt in Sanur, and at $100 for standard guest rooms and $220 for suites at the Grand Hyatt Bali in Nusa Dua. Guests may use the facilities of both resorts. Prices exclude service charges and tax.
