ONCE again as a new football season begins, the followers of ''the beautiful game'' are left feeling that someone somewhere is selling them a dummy. I refer of course to the programme planners at TVB. Last year we had the ridiculous situation when it was considered most suitable to show English Soccer sometime after midnight on Mondays. The reason given was that it was ''hot off the satellite'' and hence still fresh in the mind of those who follow the games on BFBS on Saturday nights.
This was a good enough reason for showing it early in the week but not so late that people who had to work for a living, or youngsters, were unable to stay up so late. Still, having grown accustomed to the situation (by recording the programme and watching it at a more reasonable hour), I looked forward to this season starting.
But what has happened? The programme has been moved back to Saturday evenings, as it was two years ago. It could now be described as definitely ''cold off the satellite''. I'm not complaining about the quantity of football on TV, friends back in the UK tell me that we probably see more here than they do, it's just that with a little effort it could be done with the interests of the viewers in mind.
