Three City University (CityU) undergraduates will work at Cyberport this summer as interns and explore the world of multimedia. The trio, from CityU's School of Creative Media (SCM), won the Cyberport Website Design Competition, in which they were asked to redesign Cyberport's homepage. The winning design has a unique feature that allows the web master to maintain the website with Excel instead of more complicated software, such as XML. The program was written by Year Two student David Cheung Wai-sun. Mr Cheung and his teammates Mahbubani Vivek Ashok (Year Two) and Cecilia Hui Long-wai (Year Three) had only four weeks to complete the task. 'It was a tough one given how little time we had and the amount of research we had to do,' said Mr Cheung. 'Our design is very user-friendly and easy to maintain. There is also an audio version for the blind.' Mr Cheung added that he would develop his program further and might even patent it. The team won a cash prize of $8,000, as well as the summer internship programme at Cyberport. Another SCM team, comprised of Year Two students Will Lam Sai-ho, Lisa Cheung Wing-shan and Gloria Cheung Yeuk-yin, came second in the same competition. 'I am pleased that our students' works are of professional standard in terms of concept, graphic design and techniques,' said SCM lecturer Koala Yip, who has spent years in multimedia design in Los Angeles. 'They have addressed all the client's needs - visually attractive and easy to maintain with security features.'
