Officers dress as old men to trap veteran prostitutes Young undercover police officers have been dressing up as old men with makeup and walking sticks to lure middle-aged prostitutes in Shamshuipo. The disguises were used to help in raids over the past three days in which mainland prostitutes - some in their 50s - were discovered working in cramped conditions. Some 61 women were arrested in the raids involving 13 undercover officers. Units in old buildings in Fuk Wing, Fuk Wah and Apliu streets, and on Tai Po Road, were found divided into up to 11 rooms, with each one costing the prostitutes between $100 and $150 a day, said Senior Inspector Chan Hoi-kong, assistant Shamshuipo district officer. About 400 units had been converted for the trade, he said. 'These rooms are between 60 and 100 square feet each and each room is fixed with an air-conditioner and has a bathroom, cooking equipment, like a rice cooker, and a folding table,' he said. 'Sex workers are provided with laundry services, and lookouts are available if they can afford to pay an extra $30 per client. They're just like guesthouses but are unlicensed.' The brothels were identified during surveillance and anti-vice crackdowns, according to Mr Chan. He said there was a huge number of brothels in the district. 'The main reason many sex workers come to Shamshuipo is because the rental charge here is very cheap,' he said. Mainland prostitutes find clients on the street and bring them to their room for sex. They are, on average, aged 40 and their clients include elderly men, taxi drivers, site workers and decorators. Mr Chan said younger undercover officers were now dressing older after failing to lure prostitutes on the streets. 'Mainland prostitutes did not approach or solicit them as they walked past,' he said. 'On Tuesday, officers had to have some makeup to be disguised as old people before being sent to carry out the undercover operation, and some of them carried walking sticks.' It is understood that about 50 of the apartments are run by a triad-controlled syndicate that brings mainland women to Hong Kong.
