The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has reached a settlement with Patrick Yu Chung-yin, whose sacking sparked the biggest scandal to engulf the body in its eight-year history.

It issued a joint statement with Mr Yu yesterday stating that a settlement of the issues relating to his contract had been reached and that the matter was 'satisfactorily resolved'.

Mr Yu lost his job as the EOC's operations director just before he was to take up the post last November. Explaining why Mr Yu was sacked, former EOC chairman Michael Wong Kin-chow cited an article in the South China Morning Post in which Mr Yu spoke of getting involved in Hong Kong's attempts to enact a law banning racial discrimination.

Mr Wong said it was inappropriate for Mr Yu to have made those comments.

He also resented being 'pre-empted' by his predecessor, Anna Wu Hung-yuk, who announced Mr Yu's appointment last July, before Mr Wong took up the post of chairman in August.

A commission spokeswoman said the settlement had been approved by EOC members at a board meeting.
