Zeman tries to lift tone

THE cultural battles silently fought every day in the environs of Lan Kwai Fong are being won - even though the process is slow and grinding.

A recent example of these aesthetic encounters concerns No 1 Lan Kwai Fong, the modern tower owned by property baron Allan Zeman.

Dedicated to his mission of upgrading the erstwhile Street of Shame, Mr Zeman fitted out the lobby of the building with a specially commissioned work of art and Philippe Starck furniture.

Alas, the Starck name is lost on some of the people inhabiting the building who are given to placing their deliveries on the modern art furniture, sitting on armrests and worse, on one occasion even resting tired feet on the designer pieces.

May Starck never hear about this, but Mr Zeman has now ordered the furniture to be covered in plastic sheeting.
