Shanghai is set to open school for children of Taiwanese
Shanghai plans to open its first school for the children of Taiwanese people working in the city, a move aimed at attracting more investment from the island.
The city hopes to have the school ready in time to take students from elementary to high- school levels in autumn, the Shanghai Education Commission said.
The local Taiwan Affairs Office and the education authority backed the plan, but the city was still waiting for approval from the Ministry of Education, an education official said yesterday.
Officials declined to describe the extent of Taiwan's participation or funding.
The school announcement comes despite cross-strait tensions following the election of President Chen Shui-bian to a second term in March.
Earlier this week, the People's Daily criticised a Taiwanese businessman for his support of Mr Chen.
The planned school will hire teachers from Taiwan and 'selectively use' textbooks from the island, Shanghai's Youth Daily newspaper reported.
