FILIPINAS MAKE GOOD ENGLISH TEACHERS

Tots with Filipina domestic helpers are better at English than those cared for by Chinese speakers, according to a Chinese University of Hong Kong study. Psychologists studied 52 kindergarten pupils - some looked after by Filipinas, others by Chinese speakers - and found the Filipinas' charges fared better in English grammar and vocabulary.

graduates find jobs but pay shrinks

The 2003 Graduate Employment Survey of Baptist University shows  80 per cent of its graduates found a job or furthered their studies within six months after graduation, making an average monthly salary of $8,660, compared with $9,670 in 2002.

Jane Wong from Diocesan Girls' Junior School, Lai Pui Shan from Buddhist Ma Kam Chan Memorial English Secondary School and Yip Wing Yan of Ying Wa Girls' School have won in the upper primary, junior secondary and upper secondary categories respectively of the Inter-school English Essay Competition organised by International Studies Service Centre, which attracted 1,000 entries.

for he's a doubly good fellow

Professor Tang Yuan-yan of Baptist University's Department of Computer Science has been named a Fellow both of the  International Association for Pattern Recognition and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the only HKBU scholar to have received the two honours.
