Former pianist turned DJ Cam (a.k.a. Laurent Daumail) had his Hong Kong debut on Friday night. Spending less than 20 hours in the city, the DJ impressed guests at the closing party of Le French May at the Kee Club. Infusing jazz, hip hop, and trip hop into his music, his style has put him in demand from artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Macy Gray, Madonna, and even Michael Jackson. 'I remixed many of their songs but I never compromise my style for theirs,' he says. 'I play all over the world, London, New York, Tokyo, but this is my first time in Hong Kong. I will make sure I come back soon.' DJ Cam says it was a close call that he even made it on time for the gig. The in-demand DJ is so excited about Asia that he is videoing the parties to include in his next CD to be released next year. His latest CD, Liquid Hip Hop, sees DJ Cam returning to his instrumental hip hop roots and stars rapper Jay Dee in the remix of Love Junkee. When asked where he plays most in Paris, the blunt Frenchman said: 'I do not like to play in Paris, I never play there. The French clubbers do not know how to appreciate music.' Guest of honour on Friday was French consul-general Serge Mostura. Let's hope DJ Cam kept those thoughts to himself.
