A declaration seeks the protection of social freedom
More than 200 professionals and academics have signed a declaration calling for the defence of Hong Kong's core values, which they say are being eroded.
The values include liberty, democracy, human rights, rule of law, fairness, social justice, peace and compassion, integrity and transparency, plurality, respect for individuals, and upholding professionalism.
Launching the 'Hong Kong Core Values Declaration' yesterday, the campaign's organisers said social harmony and economic success would be undermined if these values were not defended.
The declaration, published as an advertisement in several newspapers today, says: 'We are greatly disturbed by the increasing erosion of Hong Kong's core values. The goals pursued by our community seem [to be] becoming more distant. The community is filled with a strong sense of helplessness and rising frustrations.
'Our core values are being shaken. Our city's governance and business environment have deteriorated. Our society's institutional rationality and social cohesion are being weakened.
