Celebrated London theatre company Cheek by Jowl is bringing its new production of William Shakespeare's classic revenge play Othello to Hong Kong next month.
The programme marks a return to the world stage by a company renowned for giving fresh life to the classics.
Othello is a study of passion and jealousy, ambition and betrayal. With Nonso Anozie in the title role and Cheek by Jowl founders Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod as director and designer, this is world-class drama not to be missed.
Donnellan believes he has found the perfect Othello in Anozie, a 23-year-old British actor who was well received when he played King Lear for the Royal Shakespeare Company academy. Donnellan is known as one of the most dynamic directors in British drama. He is the first director of the RSC academy and has won several awards.
Cheek by Jowl was formed in 1981 and is acclaimed for its performances of the classics. It has been described as 'one of the 10 great theatre companies in the world', by Time magazine, while The Guardian of Britain called it 'one of the most innovative and influential theatre companies of the past 20 years'.
Othello will be staged from Wednesday to Sunday, July 21 to 25, at 7.45pm, with a matinee on Saturday, July 24, at 2.30pm. The performances, to be held at Hong Kong City Hall's theatre, are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
