SCMP Reporter

The 17th swimming gala organised by Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No 2 was held  at the Pao Yue Kong  complex in  Wong Chuk Hang on May 21. Although it was a rainy day, the competition went  very smoothly.

The most exciting  event  was the inter-house relay.  Competitors in every event gave their best in an attempt to win gold.

In the end, Paul House won  the best cheering team title  again this year.

The winner of the invitation relay was St Joan of Arc Secondary School. Leo House, Michael House and Gregory House won the Grade A, Grade B and Grade C titles,  respectively, while the overall championship went to Leo House (pictured above).

After the prize presentation, the swimming gala ended with the lowering of the school flag. All students, including  spectators and competitors, had a great day.

I was among students from my class who  joined the Smart Teen Challenge Camp from May 10 to 15 (pictured below) at  the Police Training School.

There were a lot of activities, including team-building sessions, abseiling, rock-climbing, rafting and foot drills. Although the fitness trainer was  strict, we knew that it was for our own good.

We learnt many things at the camp. It boosted our confidence and  self-discipline. The most important thing was that we became more considerate.

Before,  our class did not have any sense of community spirit, and we were very noisy in the classroom. But after taking part in  the camp, we became united and learnt how to care for other people.

We felt proud when it was announced in front of the whole school that our class had attended the camp.

It was an unforgettable experience.

I would like to thank the officers at the Police Training School and my teachers.

F.3C, PLK Lee Shing Pik College

My school's 37th Speech Day was held on May 28 at the school hall. We were honoured to have one of our former students -  Dr Cheng Kai-ming from  the Department of Physics at the  Chinese University of Hong Kong - as our guest- of-honour.

The ceremony began with a prayer led by our supervisor, Reverend Metz. In his report,  principal Job Li outlined the school's achievements. The school was  the first runner-up at this year's 16th Catholic Diocesan Secondary Schools Joint Athletic Meet.

After presenting certificates and awards to the graduates, Dr Cheng gave his speech.

He agreed that some students would find their studies boring, but he said: 'Never give up, and the future will appear brighter. As we grow up, it's very important to choose our interest and direction.'

He also said that we should be 'lazy' (meaning we can give up things in which we have no interest) and 'greedy' (a driving force towards success).

Ms Chan Wai-han, president of the Parent-Teacher Association, presented prizes and awards to the outstanding students.

The ceremony ended  with the singing of the school hymn.

F. 6B, Choi Hung Estate Catholic Secondary School

On May 28, visitors were provided with a glimpse of the interesting  learning experiences that the New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Southern District Secondary School will offer next year  as part of its Career-Oriented Curriculum (COC).

COC is a two-year course which incorporates a broad range of subjects while allowing students to achieve formal educational qualifications by meeting the requirements of the core subjects for the HKCEE.

One of the courses with a vocational focus is Travel and Tourism.

The school is ideally situated   for this programme.

Located on Lantau Island,  it has easy access to the Big Buddha, Silvermine Bay and  Disneyland.

The highlight of the day  was the performance by two rock bands - Elements and Johnny and Friends.

Visitors were also impressed by the school's observatory and Stargate programme.

Luisa Chak, a social worker from the YMCA (Western District), said the COC  was an innovative and unique course which gave  students who lacked the motivation to study a second chance.

Parents also agreed that  COC was an attractive option for  students.
