Implanting anti-virus and spam-filtering technologies into the infrastructure that runs vast computer and communications networks will help lower costs and bolster information security worldwide, say industry experts.

Networking equipment giant Cisco Systems and security software supplier Trend Micro last week said they were collaborating on that strategy, and vowed to deliver their first integrated products this third quarter.

Cisco will initially integrate Trend Micro's network worm and virus signatures with the Cisco Intrusion Detection System software deployed in its routers, switches and network security appliances.

'The best way to address virus, worm and other security threats is through defences integrated into the network, as opposed to relying completely on desktop or other point-product protection,' said Steve Chang, Trend Micro's chief executive and founder. 'By pairing with the leader in network hardware, we are bringing our anti-virus technology into the heart of the network. This can help deliver a more effective, lower-cost security environment for customers.'

Cisco will also market certain Trend Micro anti-virus technologies and services with its network products.

Richard Palmer, vice-president of Cisco's virtual private network (VPN) and security business unit, said most of the partners' efforts would focus on creating an 'outbreak prevention' system.

Besides stopping worms and removing potential infections from a network, the system would help companies analyse their networks for vulnerabilities, making them better prepared to withstand future attacks.
