On his first day, 'solid, reliable' Denny puts his hooves down

On his good days, Denny is a 'solid and reliable' worker with three years of experience hauling packs on Canadian mountains.

But he could not get his wits together for his first day of work in North Lantau Country Park yesterday. The four-year-old mule snorted, stamped his hooves and refused to carry packs of construction material down the hiking trail.

'He's a little bit off colour,' said trainer Simon Gillam. His wife Sharon, who has been helping out at the stable, added: 'He's like a teenager and very naughty at the moment.'

Denny is one of six mules from Canada to become the official 'pack transporters' for the construction of the Tung Chung cable car system. He is also the first mule to play hookey on the job since arriving in Hong Kong last month.

The mules must carry heavy construction materials such as cement, timber, sand and fuel down a 2km trail that is inaccessible to road vehicles.
