Key syndicate figures among 104 arrested in Mongkok swoop
Police last night smashed a prostitution racket in Mongkok with a monthly turnover of $2 million after the arrest of more than 100 people, including heads of the syndicate.
Police Commissioner Dick Lee Ming-kwai went to Mongkok to monitor operation Rootcanal in person.
The crackdown follows an extensive investigation that saw undercover police infiltrating the syndicate, which has triad connections. Evidence has been collected and key members of the syndicate identified since last year.
Police believe the Wo Shing Wo triad group is behind the prostitution racket and it was running massage parlours in the area.
The head of the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, Chief Superintendent Fung Kin-man, who was in charge of the operation, said officers went undercover as clients of the prostitutes and also infiltrated the syndicate to gather more evidence.
