Five local universities and six international schools marked World Environment Day on June 5 by participating in Hong Kong's first CD recycling programme at Cyberport.
More than 100 students used more than 6,000 discarded CDs to build a mosaic of the word 'recycle' and the triangular symbol that represents it in the middle of the Cyberport podium.
Donated by large companies, the CDs ranged from old computer programs, games, pirated CDs and some 'bad rock and roll music', organisers said.
The event was organised by EastPoint Property Management and Friends of the Earth (FoE), with the Hong Kong offices of Microsoft and Dell as sponsors.
The event was to encourage the recycling of CDs, which are made out of polycarbonate plastic. To recycle them, they are broken down and remade into raw plastic materials which are good for making computers, cell phones and new CDs.
Students from schools ranging from primary to university level volunteered to help build the mosaic, which was designed by FoE.
