New World First Bus drivers have called off their go-slow protest planned for today after management agreed to bring forward their next pay review by six months.
But it was unclear last night whether the drivers would accept a $1,000 bonus the management had offered in lieu of a pay rise instead of the $1,300 the staff union had demanded.
'The differences are still not completely solved,' staff union chairman Chung Chung-fai said after talks with management yesterday. He said members would be sent a questionnaire to see if they agreed with the deal.
'The biggest reason for the turnaround was that we didn't want to cause inconvenience to the public,' Mr Chung said.
'Also, management showed us concrete statistics that explained why they would only offer a $1,000 bonus.'
The union, which represents about 40 per cent of the bus operator's 2,700 staff, had earlier threatened to stage a go-slow today that it said would delay buses on affected routes by about 10 minutes.
