The budget airline intends to expand its fleet, destinations and frequencies

Valuair intends to become the first budget airline to enter the mainland market and will double its fleet before the end of the year, according to a founding shareholder in Singapore's first low-cost carrier.

Under the last air services agreement negotiated between China and Singapore, Valuair has rights to fly to any destination in the mainland except Beijing and Shanghai, according to Valuair executive director Jimmy Lau Sia-kok. Mr Lau owns 10.9 per cent of the company.

'We are looking to add two - if not three - destinations to our network by the end of the year in addition to expanding the frequencies of our existing services, including Hong Kong,' Mr Lau said.

'We hope to add one China destination by year-end. [Singapore's airlines] are nowhere near using up all our rights to China.

'The only thing stopping [Valuair] is that we don't have the equipment yet.'
