Mosquitoes thrive amid rubbish and stagnant water

On a tour around various urban areas yesterday, the Post found a number of unhygienic spots serving as potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

In To Kwa Wan, the six light wells of Wan Tat Building - which is already one of the government's hygiene improvement targets - had numerous pools of foul-smelling stagnant water.

Even from the second floor, bugs could be seen moving in the water amid piles of rubbish.

The chairman of the Wan Tat Building owners' association, Ng Kwai-hung, said mosquitoes bred freely in the water that accumulated in the light wells.

'There are always a lot of mosquitoes. But the situation is even worse after the government built some pipes to channel the water. Those pipes are always blocked. Dirty water spills and accumulates in the light wells,' Mr Ng said.
