Truck hijacked in broad daylight by pistol-wielding bandits

Audacious robbers escaped with just part of a $7 million haul of silver bars yesterday after hijacking a truck in broad daylight and eluding police who disturbed them as they were transferring the loot.

In a daring noon raid that recalled the sensational $167 million airport tunnel hijack in 1991, the truck was forced to stop on the Ting Kau Bridge near Tsing Yi by two cars, one black, one gold.

As stunned passing motorists watched, four masked bandits, armed with pistols or replicas, jumped out and pulled the 45-year-old driver and a 38-year-old co-worker out of the truck and forced them into the black car. The truck was then driven away.

The pair were tied up, with their eyes and mouths covered with adhesive tape, and later dumped separately in remote parts of the New Territories.

Patrolling police spotted the truck, one of its number plates changed, in a Kowloon City car park about 5.30pm. But the bandits escaped, leaving behind 100 of the silver bars, worth $6 million.

The driver, identified by police only by his surname, Wong, was dumped in Ma On Shan Tsuen, a quiet corner in Ma On Shan Country Park, while his co-worker, Lau, was abandoned at Sha Lo Tung in Tai Po.
