A proposal to develop a wind farm in the Pearl River estuary was unveiled yesterday at a renewable-energy workshop organised by the British consulate.

The plan, drafted by Allied Process Engineering, calls for 60 wind turbines to be built next to the proposed bridge linking Hong Kong with Macau and Zhuhai.

The workshop, attended by British Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Margaret Beckett, is part of Britain's effort to foster closer ties with the city and the mainland.

The proposed wind turbines would each be 150 metres high and would be built on the west side of the estuary near the bridge.

The wind farm would have a generating capacity of 180mW, and its power would be exported to Zhuhai, which is plagued by power shortages.

Building the wind farm with the bridge would shave 15 per cent off the costs, said Stephen Lee Chi-kong, chairman of the consulting firm.
