Police reveal details of the biggest single seizure of the drug so far this year
Mainland police yesterday revealed details of several drug-trafficking cases they have recently solved, including the biggest single seizure of heroin this year.
Marking World Drug Day, Yunnan police said they had arrested two suspects over the smuggling of 501kg of heroin into the country.
According to Xinhua, the two were part of a gang who smuggled the heroin from Burma and planned to ship it from Chongqing to Guangdong and then to overseas markets.
The news agency said the heroin had been found inside hidden compartments in converted vehicles the traffickers had used to cross the border.
'This is the biggest seizure of heroin this year,' said Li Yuan- zheng , a vice-director of the Narcotics Control Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security.
Mr Li said assuming a daily consumption of 0.3 grams per person, the heroin seized would be enough to last 5,000 addicts a year.
