THE Rotary Club of Queensway awarded three scholarships to outstanding secondary school students this month.

  Wong Yuen-shan, a student of St Paul's Co-educational College, was awarded a $50,000 scholarship. Yuen-shan plans to study Economics at the University of Chicago.

  The 19-year-old student, who scored six As and three Bs in the HKCEE, hopes to become a politician in the future.

  Yuen-shan was very active in extra-curricular activities while at St Paul's. Besides being a school prefect and a class captain, he was the champion of several debating, public speaking and basketball competitions.

  He was also the chairman of the Current Affairs Club, the manager of the String Orchestra and the chairman of the Class Council.

 Yuen-shan also has a keen interest in drama. He directed and acted one of the school dramas.

  ''We are very impressed with his achievements'', said Mrs Gloria Chan, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Queensway.

  Enoch Lee and Poon Hak-fei were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship.

  Enoch earned four As and one B in this year's HKCEE. He has been an active volunteer worker in community projects in the past few years.

  The scholar plans to study Engineering at the University of Wisconsin.

  ''Enoch's interest and involvement in community service coincides with the Rotary spirit which we want to encourage young people to develop,'' Mrs Chan said.

  Hak-fei, who scored four As and one B in the HKCEE, has applied to study Enginnering at Oxford University. The student attended primary school in China.

  ''We are happy to award the $5,000 scholarship to Hak-fei in recognition of his achievements in adjusting to the Hong Kong education system,'' said Mrs Estella Chan, the Vocational Service Director of Rotary Club of Queensway.

  The scholarships, organised by the Vocational service Committee of the Rotary Club of Queensway, are designed for outstanding secondary school students who intend to undertake undergraduate studies overseas.

  They aim to recognise the students' achievements and encourage them in their future endeavours.

  Selection was based on the student's academic achievements, involvement in extra-curricular activities, commitment to Hong Kong and presentation skills.

  Over 30 students applied for the scholarships this year.

  The Rotary Club of Queensway is the first Rotary Club in Hong Kong and Macau formed by a group of female professionals and executives. It was chartered in November, 1992.
