THE Chinese University is inviting applications for its new degree programme in translation, which starts in September 1994. The major, Programme in Translation, which combines skills training and academic study and research, is designed for students interested in: (1) translation and interpretation theory and practice, and (2) both the Chinese language and the English language and how they function in different contexts. Courses in Chinese and English communication techniques form a sound languages base for the study of a variety of upper year subjects. Since this compact programme is made up of around 60 units, students will be able to take courses in directly and indirectly related disciplines, such as Chinese Language and Literature, English, French, German, Japanese Studies, Journalism and Communication, Government and Public Administration, Business Administration or Law, as dictated by their interests and ability. Graduates will be fully qualified to pursue a career in translation-interpretation or other translation-communication fields. If they choose further study, they may consider the part-time MA or the full-time M.Phil. Degree Programmes in Translation. Application forms should be submitted not later than November 1, through the Joint University and Polytechnic Admission System.
