Cable 'outdated and inconsequential'

With Euro 2004 well under way, I must say I am disgusted with Cable TV's coverage. I was prompted to write this letter by David Wong's letter on Friday, June 18. Although this type of incident has not affected me, I can understand his frustrations. He is, I am sure, correct that no other sports broadcasting channel would announce the final score of a match at half-time.

With the rights to a major tournament, surely Cable TV would want to give themselves a good image ahead of next season's English Premier League, which most fans now dread.

The news that John Dykes and his team will not be broadcasting and analysing the games next season was already terrible and now we know that they'll be replaced by some amateurs who seem to care more about what the weather is like at 2am in Hong Kong than what is happening in the game we are watching.

Instead of the ESPN team's half-time analysis of the first- half action, Cable has decided to show a screen telling us how many shots each of the teams have had. Also, for some bizarre reason, the Sixties is the theme of Cable TV's broadcast. The names 'Euro Go Go Goal' and 'Euro A Go Go' capture the spirit of Cable TV's broadcasting perfectly: an outdated and inconsequential variety show.

I hope Cable TV considers using a more professional approach when it broadcasts the Premiership next season.
