X-Ecutioners

Revolutions (Columbia)

The art of scratching has rarely sounded sweeter. New York's X-Ecutioners - a three-man turntablist collective of DJs Rob Swift, Roc Raida and Total Eclipse - will be filling dance floors everywhere with their third release.

Delving deep into their record crates, the boys mix, scratch and splice everything on the 18 tracks herein, throwing down the best of rock, rap, hip-hop, pop and old-school hits.

Who'd have thought beat juggling and sample frolicking could be so acrobatic? If you thought the X men's 2002 release Built from Scratch was good, then this action-packed set will knock you out. There's enough head-bopping, singalong anthems to inspire the next generation of scratch-meisters. On top of the fat bass lines and classic cuts are some of the smartest rhymes and quirky lines they've dedicated to vinyl.

When you've recovered from the awe-inspiring turntable skills, check out the MC talents on show. The guest roster reads like a who's who of the game, with contributions from The Roots' Black Thought, dead prez, Fat Joe, Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah and Slug from Atmosphere.

Revolutions covers the full sweep of hip-hop entertainment, from turntable battles to dance-floor smashers, MC showcases, playful skits and old-school tributes. The X-Ecutioners' attitude is hardcore, their vibe is cheerful and their talent is, well, deadly.
