Sales of mainland products drop 30pc in some HK stores
Food manufacturers in Taiwan have been flooded with orders from Hong Kong as the mainland struggles to cope with a series of scares afflicting the industry.
The vice-president of the Hong Kong Food Trades Association, Lee Kwong-lam, told the Sunday Morning Post that sales of mainland products - especially pre-packaged and canned food - had dropped by 30 per cent in some grocery stores.
'Taiwan has become a major source as its food products are similar to those from the mainland and people have confidence in its quality and safety,' Mr Lee said.
The association represents hundreds of traders who handle daily staples such as rice, canned foods and sugar.
Vermicelli, sauces and canned foods were the most popular items being bought from Taiwan. He said consumers were willing to pay 10 to 20 per cent more for such products.
