SUN MICROSYSTEMS

Clark Masters  (right), former head of Sun Microsystems' enterprise systems group, has been named executive vice-president of the firm's newly created Global Government Office.

In this position, Mr Masters will lead Sun in addressing the technology needs of governments worldwide. As part of the move, he also assumes the position of president at Sun Microsystems Federal in the United States.

'Government sales present huge opportunities for Sun, with increased focus worldwide on security solutions, e-government projects and new compliance requirements. Sun has increasingly found success in creating turnkey, customer-specific solutions and pricing models for governments of all sizes,' he said.

A veteran in the information technology industry, Mr Masters brings more than 20 years' experience working with global public sector, intelligence community and defence organisations.

His extensive experience and strong customer relationships derive from a career that spans  Floating Point Systems, Cray Research and Sun.

BLUE MARTINI SOFTWARE

The Silicon Valley-based supplier of automated sales optimisation software has appointed Rocky Gunderson  as vice-president  of global marketing  and business development.

Mr Gunderson previously served as senior vice-president of marketing and business development at Descartes Systems Group, chief executive for Vigilance Software, chief operating officer at CrossLogix and senior vice-president at enterprise resource planning software vendor Baan.

SYBASE

Database and mobile software firm Sybase has hired Novell executive Andy Woo  to head its Southeast Asia business.

Mr Woo will serve as managing director of Sybase operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

He joins the firm from Novell, where he was managing director for the Asean region. A 30-year IT industry veteran, Mr Woo has also worked with Borland, Digital and Olivetti.

He lives in Kuala Lumpur and serves as chairman of the Open Source Special Interest Group.

CASBAA

The Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia  has named Henry Middleton  (far right) as general manager  of its Singapore and Southeast Asia operations.  Casbaa, a non-profit trade organisation that promotes multichannel television and data transmission, said Mr Middleton had a 'breadth of knowledge of the pay-television industry, including regulatory, business development and promotional issues'.

Q1 LABS

The Massachusetts-based information security company has expanded its executive team with the addition of industry veteran Kurt Lee.  Mr Lee will help widen the market for Q1 Labs, which provides its QRadar surveillance, analysis and control technology, to include organisations in Asia.

He assumes the position of area vice-president, west.

This includes pushing sales campaigns and partner recruitment efforts on the US west coast and the Asia-Pacific region.

Before joining Q1 Labs, Mr Lee served as vice-president of worldwide sales at ArcSight, a subscriber identity module provider. He previously handled sales campaigns for Riptech, a company acquired by information security giant Symantec.

He has also served as vice-president of worldwide sales at Open Service and a director at Raptor Systems.

APPMAIL

Software start-up AppMail  has selected Rajiv Dutta,  chief financial officer at internet auction giant eBay, to join its advisory board.

Mr Dutta will help AppMail form its strategy and business development agenda.

With offices in the US, Britain and Australia, AppMail develops software used to automate business processes done manually or through e-mail.

Since January 2001, Mr Dutta has served as eBay's senior vice-president and chief financial officer. He was vice-president of finance and investor relations from August 1999 to January 2001, after working as finance director from July 1998 to August 1999.

He previously worked at KLA-Tencor and Bio-Rad Laboratories.

CYBERGUARD

Network security appliance maker CyberGuard  has appointed Bryan Bain  as vice-president  of worldwide marketing.

An expert in marketing and corporate development in the information security sector, Mr Bain will be responsible for developing marketing strategy and directing global branding efforts for the Florida-based company's expanded product portfolio.

Before joining CyberGuard, Mr Bain was vice-president of marketing and corporate development for Netilla Networks.

He also served as regional vice-president of sales and business development for the Americas east division of Array Networks, a provider of web traffic management appliances.
