A SHOWER of sparkles descended over the Mid-Autumn celebrations in Zhuhai last night. An hour-long display of fireworks from Dongguan, and paid for by the Martell Cognac company, was watched by 600 local dignitaries. In Hong Kong, parades of dragons, lions, lotus boats and, of course, lanterns attracted about 300,000 people to Mid-Autumn Festival carnivals across the territory. The biggest at Victoria Park was given a traditional Chinese feel with an exotic autumn scenes parade from the Foshan folk art troupe and colourful displays from the China folk culture villages of Shenzhen. More than 500 performers took part in the Urban Council's $2.5 million extravaganza, billed as the biggest and best since the event was first held in the park 20 years ago. Other major attractions included ethnic culinary delicacies, handicraft stalls, fortune-telling and a dazzling lantern corridor.
