Butcher set to leave PCCW

The boardroom doors at PCCW continue to revolve, with a second director set to depart Hong Kong's leading carrier this year.

After just 2? years with the firm, chief operating officer Mike Butcher will leave PCCW upon serving out his contract at the end of the year.

Former SmarTone chief executive Ian Stone would replace Mr Butcher as interim UK Broadband chief executive, a PCCW spokeswoman said.

Mr Butcher, who was responsible for starting up PCCW's British broadband business, is the second director to leave the firm this year.

Former HK Telecom chief executive Linus Cheung Wing-lam resigned as deputy chairman in February.

Mr Butcher's departure was expected. The former Lucent veteran lost out to Jack So Chak-kwong in the battle for the top job to manage the fixed-line carrier in Hong Kong.

Mr So was appointed group managing director in September last year. Shortly after, Mr Butcher moved to Britain to head the firm's wireless broadband start-up business there.

Mr So said in a statement: 'The company has much to thank Mike for and we wish him well in the future.'
