BREAKING NEWS
On Wednesday - a slow news day on the eve of the July 1 holiday - Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing chief executive Paul Chow Man-yiu surprised reporters by revealing that the stock exchange was considering the introduction of so-called 'circuit breakers', which would halt trading if certain volatility ceilings were breached.
'Why are you mentioning this now,' reporters asked, remembering the recent 90 per cent, one-day plunge of Far East Pharmaceutical, whose chairman remains largely incommunicado on the mainland.
Mr Chow insisted Far East's plight had nothing to do with it. Instead he was tipping his hand because 'otherwise you would have nothing to write about today'.
How right he was - we ended up leading the business section with that story. Thanks for keeping us in mind, Mr Chow.
