Thirty years ago, bank employee Lam Yiu-chung showed his loyalty to his company when he became one of the 'Courageous Eleven' who overpowered an armed robber to end an 18-hour siege. On May 24, 1974, mainlander Li Wai-pan walked into a Mongkok branch of the Po Sang Bank as it was about to close its doors, and announced his intention to rob it. After firing a volley of shots, Li tied up 11 hostages. During overnight negotiations he threatened to kill them unless the police provided him with a means of escape. As Li was talking to a negotiator, a hostage jumped him and kicked his gun from his hand. The others, some with their hands still tied, then tackled Li and brought him to the ground. It was the first time that hostages had been taken in a bank robbery in Hong Kong.
