The latest version of Microsoft Word is one of the stand-out features of the new Office 2004 application suite. It's just as impressive as the new Entourage, with Word's most delightful new feature being the Notebook layout view.

This is a Word document that opens as a ruled Notebook page with tabs on the page's edge that identify other sections (subjects).

The idea is that when you want to jot down notes, the familiar notebook format is more user-friendly and less formal than starting a full Word document.

As silly as this concept seems (Notebook actually has more features than a 'formal' Word document), it works.

I am more inclined to open a Notebook page for daily diary use as well as for phone and meeting notes than I am to start a new Word document.

What distinguishes Notebook from a traditional Word document are features that would be appropriate to making lists and assigning sequence or priority. For instance, when a Notebook page is active, additional options appear in the Formatting Palette that allow you to add checkboxes, assign priorities, and/or make list items into Entourage tasks for calendar purposes or reminders.
