Delay reportedly linked to recent detention of a top propaganda official

A plan to form a new media conglomerate in Chongqing for the purpose of a Hong Kong listing has been delayed, which sources say could be due to the recent detention of a top propaganda official.

Under the original plan, the Chongqing government was to set up Chongqing Television Broadcasting Group by June 18, with assets to include the city's television, cable and other media properties.

But the date has passed and city officials are uncertain when the re-organisation will take place.

'We have yet to be informed about the formation of the group,' a Chongqing Television Media spokesman said. 'We are not sure when it will be set up.'

A spokesman at the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, which endorsed the plan, declined to comment.

One company source noted the delay came after the detention of Zhang Zonghai, Chongqing's top propaganda official.
