A 50-year-old gardener died after falling from a tree he was trimming in the grounds of the luxury Shek O mansion of tycoon Lui Che-woo.

Fong Leung-kei, was found yesterday afternoon lying outside the mansion on Shek O Road by a Filipino gardener who was working at a nearby house.

He had suffered head injuries and was already unconscious. Beside him was a wooden ladder about 2.3 metres high.

The Filipino gardener immediately called emergency services, but Fong was declared dead at the scene by ambulance officers.

Initial police investigations suggested he had been dead for two hours before his body was found.

Officers did not believe his death was suspicious. They said it appeared that Fong lost his balance and fell from the ladder while trimming a huge tree outside the tycoon's house.

Neighbours said the gardener had been the only person living at the spacious mansion. They said Mr Lui and his family seldom visited, even during holidays.

The octogenarian property, construction and hotel tycoon is chairman of the K Wah Group and co-owner of the Galaxy Casino Company.
