Sars victims last night urged all key medical officials criticised by the Legislative Council's Sars inquiry panel to step down.

Wan Cho-nam, whose mother contracted Sars at Northern Hospital in April last year, said he welcomed the resignation of Hospital Authority chairman Leong Che-hung. But he was disappointed with Dr Leong's reluctance to admit his mistakes in handling Sars.

'However, all the officials who were held responsible by the inquiry panel should resign to shoulder their responsibilities in the Sars outbreak,' Mr Wan said.

Tim Pang Hung-cheong, a patients' rights advocate from the Society for Community Organisation, said the authority's chief executive William Ho Shiu-wei, director of professional services and public affairs Ko Wing-man as well as Fung Hong and Lily Chiu Lei-lei, chiefs of the Sars-hit Prince of Wales and Princess Margaret hospitals, should apologise and step down.

All these medical officials were criticised by the inquiry panel. Mr Pang called on them to surrender the bonuses they received from the authority last year.

He said the government should stop pensions for former director of health Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun whose performance was found to be unsatisfactory by the inquiry panel.
