Story-telling is one the most effective ways to encourage young people to read.
The programme is part of Reading Summer 2004, a series of reading activities hosted by the government and voluntary groups to promote reading and cultivate the practice among students and their parents.
The Read and Share hosts include Standing Committee on Language Education and Research chairman Michael Tien Pak-sun, Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fan, Oxfam Hong Kong director Chong Chan-yau and veteran Radio Hong Kong DJ Blanche Tang Oi-lam. They will not only recite folklore in Chinese or English, they will also share wisdom and insight.
Mr Tien will read The Unhappy Turtle by Hamid Reza Beidaghi, while Mr Chong will use The Seeing Stick to inspire young people to see beyond what is 'normal'.
The Seeing Stick is about an old blind man encouraging a blind princess to use her walking stick to 'see' the world.
