After six years as an actor, you recently turned to producing and entered the catering industry. How would you describe your job now? A: I am a film producer as well as owner of a restaurant, Mei's Mansion, in Beijing. The restaurant was the private cafe of Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), the Peking Opera singer. What has a restaurant to do with Mei Lanfang, one of the greatest singer-actor-dancers in Chinese history? A: At the beginning of last year I had an idea to produce a film to commemorate Mei Lanfang. I talked to Mei Baojiu , Mei's son who is also an opera singer. He told me a lot about his father. Apparently Mei was very careful about what he ate to protect his skin, throat and health. His chef cooked food combining the style of Jiangsu, Shanghai and the northern regions. That's how I came to the idea of a Mei-themed restaurant. I hoped the place would spread the Mei culture and help promote my future film. Why do you have such admiration for Mei? A: He was not only a great artist but a man with elegant taste towards life. What's the connection of your restaurant to Mei Lanfang? A: The chefs are all apprentices of the chef who served Mei. We have decorations of the 1920s, exhibit Mei's pictures and air his operas. Therefore people can learn more about Mei in this atmosphere. Which role do you see as the most important in your life? A: Absolutely the role as a film producer. Filming is an inseparable part of my life and I can give up anything for it. I became addicted to movies as a young kid. I studied for only three years in a medical university in Shanghai, then left and took up acting. As for the restaurant, I know absolutely zero about cooking. What are the kinds of film would you like to make? A: I want to make films which can be easily understood by the people and which will move them. My ideal film should also gain people's respect, such as the Godfather trilogy. Mei Lanfang is going to be my debut in film producing. It will cost US$15 million to produce and I hope that it will move people. It will kick off shooting next year.
