Lau Chin-shek, president of the Confederation of Trade Unions, will not run under its banner in September's Legco election following controversy surrounding his recent call for conciliation with Beijing. He said he understood his remarks, made without prior discussion within the confederation, had aroused doubts among member unions. Mr Lau said he believed such an arrangement could give him 'greater political space and lessen the internal controversy'. Mr Lau came under attack from fellow pro-democracy activists after his olive branch to mainland authorities. He remarked later that he would vote for the Communist Party if it introduced democracy, fanning the hostility towards him.
